Portuguese presidency

“We need a new treaty and we need it fast”

Thursday 12 July 2007

In July, Portugal will take over the presidency of the European Union, currently held by Germany.

The four main topics that will be addressed during the presidency are in line with the programmes of the German and the (upcoming) Slovenian presidency:

- A new Treaty
- Goals set in the Lisbon agenda
- Security, freedom and justice
- External relations

On Friday 15/6 the Eurofedop trade council Health has already discussed the health priorities of the Portuguese presidency, which will focus on health and migration. While the German presidency focused on the relation with the eastern neighbours, Portugal focuses on the relations with the Mediterranean countries. However, the main topic will probably be the new treaty for Europe, as an alternative for the ‘Constitution’ for Europe which was rejected by France and the Netherlands in 2005. The Portuguese presidency will also try to reach a political agreement with regard to the liberalisation of postal services, on which the European Parliament will vote in July.
