Trade Council: Local administrations guarantee citizens’ democratic participation

Brussels (Belgium), 21.03.2012

Thursday 22 March 2012

On the occasion of the meeting of CESI´s Trade Council Local and Regional Administrations (21st March, Luxemburg), chaired by its President Hans Freiler (GÖD), participants from different national trade unions discussed the impacts of the current crisis …

Among others, the revision of the Working Time Directive, austerity constraints on local administrations, the shortage of water resources, the European Social Charta and the European Social Dialogue were debated.

The CESI Secretary General Klaus Heeger joined the meeting in order to present his priorities for 2012 and underlined the importance and contribution of the Trade Councils to CESI´s visibility and recognition at European level. As a consequence, the Secretary General clearly advocated his aim of further integrating the Trade Councils into the structural and operative frameworks of CESI.

“A stronger communication and cooperation between the different Trade Councils on the one hand, and the Trade Councils and the Secretariat General on the other is of tremendous importance for our work”, Heeger underlined.

The participants of the Trade Council showed themselves very concerned about how current austerity and budget cut measures affect and dismantle local administrations. “Those are nevertheless the first and crucial contact points between citizens and their state”, Freiler stressed.

In this respect, Heeger pointed out that the “ever further dismantlement of the local administrations touches the very principle of citizens’ democratic participation”. The trade unions confirmed that and feel themselves obliged not just to complain about this situation, but to work and to stand up against further demolition of the local administrations.
