CES - The Cyprus EU-Presidency: Goals, Expectations and the EU-Turkish Relations

Goethe Institute, Brussels, 20.06.2012

Thursday 21 June 2012

Secretary General Bert Van Caelenberg attended the above-mentioned session on issues which the next presidency of the EU will focus on.

Fundamental challenges lie ahead of the European Union. Not only there is the ongoing financial crisis, requiring crisis management and economic growth strategies, but reforms in policy fields such as home affairs, agriculture and the cohesion policy will also be on the agenda.

The next presidency of the European Union, which will be assured by Cyprus during the next six months, intends to give new impulses to the EU policy in these fields.

The meeting was opened by Tomi Huhtanen, Director of the Centre for European Studies. Among the speakers addressing the audience, we may mention Markus Ferber, MEP, chairman of the CSU Group in the European Parliament, as well as Andreas Mavroyiannis, Deputy Minister to the President of the Republic of Cyprus for EU Affairs. Mr Mavroyiannis assured that the Cyprus reunification question will not be mixed with presidency business.

Eurofedop will invite the CES (which is the EPP’s study group) to participate with a Western Balkan collaborator in the seminar planned for 7 and 8 September next in Zagreb, Croatia.
