POA (UK) - Pensions reform: EUROFEDOP to support POA e-petition

Tuesday 3 July 2012

Request for your signature of solidarity as European colleague

The POA is launching an appeal to its members to sign an e-petition on pensions reform. The aim is to reach enough signatures so that a debate in the House of Commons could be forced. The Government plans to raise the normal pension age gradually to 66 years between 2018 and 2020 and even to 68 between 2044 and 2046.

As regards prison staff, the POA requests that their pension age would be fixed at 60 years of age, in line with the armed forces, police, fire and ambulance services. This to recognise the dangerous environment and physical nature of the work. It is unrealistic to expect staff up to 68 years of age to physically restrain and intervene in violent incidents with young, fit and sometimes disturbed prisoners. THE GOVERNMENT MUST RECOGNISE PRISON OFFICER’S STATUS AS A FIRST RESPONSE EMERGENCY SERVICE AND SET A NORMAL RETIREMENT AGE FOR PRISON OFFICER AT 60.

100,000 signatures are required. The e-petition will be closed on 08/11/2012 at 14:22.

We kindly request that you express your solidarity with the POA e-campaign by adding your signature to the e-petition. For this, please go to the e-petition website (where you can also find information on the number of signatures obtained so far):
